You can head west towards Bath and onto Bristol for culture and retail therapy or you can head east for Caen Hill locks in Devizes and a real adventure - both just a gentle cruise away and both requiring a sense of adventure and bags. Bags? In Bath, to carry all your purchases and in Devizes, bags of enthusiasm and energy!
Before you head off, you might like to explore the eclectic mix of Saxon, Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Industrial Revolution architecture and the Tithe Barn is worth a visit - you might recognize it as it's been used for a film set on many occasions.
So, eastwards will take you through some of Wiltshire's best scenery towards the historic, pretty market town of Devizes and the flight of 29 Caen Hill locks, rising 235ft and taking around 5-6 hours to do. Locks may seem a bit daunting at first, but they're easy once you've gone through your first one and there's often an appreciative audience ready to applaud!Travelling through the heart of an ancient landscape, passing close to the Avebury Stones, you can wind your way onwards to Hungerford, Newbury and Reading on a longer cruise.
