At Anglo Welsh, we understand that narrowboats require specialist care both on and off the water. Our narrowboat dry dock services provide comprehensive inspection, maintenance and repair work in a controlled, on-land environment — ensuring your vessel performs reliably and stays in prime condition year-round.

Dry docking is a critical part of narrowboat ownership. It allows our experienced engineers to access the hull, propeller, through-hull fittings, anodes and other components that can’t be fully serviced while afloat. Whether you’re planning seasonal maintenance or need specific remedial work, our dry dock services are designed to deliver both quality and peace of mind.

What Are Narrowboat Dry Dock Services?

Dry docking refers to the process of lifting your narrowboat out of the water and onto stands so that the full exterior and underwater systems can be inspected, maintained and repaired. It’s an opportunity to address issues that aren’t visible during regular afloat servicing — and to protect your investment for years to come.

Our dry dock services include:

  • Thorough hull inspection and grading
  • Blacking and repainting with anti-fouling coatings
  • Anode inspection and replacement
  • Propeller and stern gear servicing
  • Inspection and servicing of through-hull fittings
  • Structural checks and remedial work
  • Rectification of water ingress or osmosis

All work is carried out by engineers experienced in narrowboat systems and traditional hull care, using quality materials and techniques developed over years of fleet maintenance.

Why Narrowboat Dry Docking Matters

Keeping your narrowboat well maintained below the waterline is essential for safety, performance and longevity. Dry dock services help you:

Ensure Safety: Hidden damage or wear to the hull, propeller or fittings can compromise efficiency and safety. Dry docking allows full visibility and rectification.

Prevent Long-Term Damage: Periodic inspection and blacking reduce the risk of corrosion, osmosis and other costly issues.

Optimise Performance: A clean, well-maintained hull reduces drag and improves fuel efficiency — especially important on longer cruises.

Protect Your Investment: Dry docking is a long-term investment in your boat’s condition, resale value and structural integrity.

Our Dry Dock Process

Every narrowboat has its own needs. At Anglo Welsh, our dry dock services follow a structured process to ensure thoroughness and clarity:

  1. Pre-Dry Dock Inspection
We assess your narrowboat afloat to determine necessary work and prepare a detailed estimate.
  2. Lifting & Support
Using dedicated facilities, we lift your boat safely and position it on secure stands for full access.
  3. Hull & Underwater Work
Engineers carry out blacking, fitting adjustments, anode replacement, structural inspections and any agreed repairs.
  4. Quality Assurance
Work is checked against industry-standard benchmarks and safety criteria.
  5. Refloat & Handover
Once complete, your narrowboat is carefully returned to the water and handed back with post-service guidance.

Throughout every stage, you receive transparent communication and honest advice on what’s needed — and why.

When Should You Dry Dock Your Narrowboat?

The ideal frequency of dry dock services depends on your boat’s usage, age and cruising environment.

Many owners choose dry docking:

  • Annually or every 12–24 months
  • Before a long cruising season
  • After winter storage or extended layup
  • If there are signs of hull damage or performance issues

Our engineering team can recommend an appropriate dry dock schedule based on inspection and service history.

FAQs – Narrowboat Dry Dock Services

What is dry docking?

Dry docking is lifting your narrowboat out of the water to inspect and service parts of the vessel that can’t be reached when afloat, such as the hull, propeller and through-hull fittings.

How often should a narrowboat be dry docked?

This varies by use and condition, but many owners opt for dry dock services annually or every 12–24 months.

Will dry docking improve my boat’s performance?

Yes. Removing marine growth and servicing underwater components reduces drag and improves efficiency.

Can you inspect for osmosis during dry docking?

Yes — dry dock inspection allows us to check for signs of osmosis and carry out remedial work if necessary.
